What is an Inspection Window?

Inspection windows, also known as control windows, are transparent panels placed on enclosures to offer a clear view of the internal components.
These windows come in various sizes, from small hatches that can be attached to an existing  enclosure, to full-size doors. Inspection windows are designed to be compatible with specific enclosure models, you can find this information on the product page or specsheet.

Typically, inspection windows are made from polycarbonate or acrylic. These materials are ideal for withstanding wear and tear, while providing a clear view inside the enclosure.

Many inspection windows are openable, often using mechanisms like keylocks, and when closed, they still maintain a level of protection against external elements. This level of protection, measured by the IP rating, varies depending on the window’s design.

What is it used for?

Inspection windows provide a crucial safety feature for enclosures housing hazardous elements like live electricity. By allowing clear visbility of the internal components, they eliminate the need to directly open the enclosure. This reduces the risk of accidents or injuries from electrical hazards or unexpected malfunctions.

Enclosures are often used in environments with dust, moisture, or other contaminants. Frequent opening of the enclosure for visual checks would expose the delicate components within. Inspection windows offer a solution by providing a clear view, while acting as a barrier, shielding the contents from these external threats.

Which ranges have Inspection Windows?

While the core function remains the same, inspection windows offer a variety of material choices, opening mechanisms, and ingress protection levels.

Examples:

For smaller enclosures, clear lid enclosures offer a great alternative to inspection windows. These lids provide a fully unobstructed view of the interior while maintaining the enclosure’s IP rating. Examples include the Schneider Thalassa PLS range with low or high clear lid options, as well as the Fibox Piccolo and Ensto Cubo ranges.
